Aberdeenshire

Located on the East Coast of Scotland, Aberdeenshire shows signs of settlements dating back to the Neolithic and Bronze ages, meaning that even early man appreciated the natural beauty of the area and that is one of the things that really hasn’t changed much over the intervening years. For a truly royal experience, you can take a trip to Balmoral Castle, a Royal residence since 1852 when Queen Victoria purchased it with her husband, although it was soon found to be far too small and was completely rebuilt in 1856. The new building was designed to feature Scots Baronial style architecture and amendments to the original plans were made by Prince Albert himself. Now covering nearly 50,000 acres, the estate is still in working order and includes several herds of deer, grouse moors and the famous Highland cattle. There are plenty of other castles to visit in varying states of repair including the ruins of Dunnottar Castle which sits on a rocky outcrop over the North Sea from which you can enjoy spectacular views and maybe even spot of the rare birds which make their home there. Or if you fancy a castle which is still standing, you can visit Crathes Castle near Banchory, given to the Burnett of Leys family by Robert the Bruce himself and now owned and run by the National Trust and home to a significant portrait collection and, if you believe the rumours, a ghostly green lady who haunts one of the rooms. If you prefer to see what nature has had in store for Aberdeenshire, then why not take a trip to Burn O’Vat? A huge pothole thought to have been created by the movements of glacial ice sheets around 14,000 years ago, Burn O’Vat was supposedly used by Rob Roy as a hideout when he was evading the authorities, and now has a visitor centre where you can see taxidermy and topographical exhibits. Avon

With ample evidence of its 7000 year history, County Galway is not only a great place for a short break, but also a vibrant county which has much to offer visitors wherever their interests may lie. For nature lovers, Connemara National Park is an ideal spot to visit on a gift break to Galway. Opened to the public in 1980, the park retains evidence of human settlement, including 4000 year old megalithic court tombs and a 19th century graveyard. There are numerous species of flora and fauna to be found in the park, including carnivorous specimens such as sundew and butterworts trap, a variety of birds including kestrels, peregrine falcons and merlins, and larger animals such as stoats, bats and the eponymous Connemara pony. Much of Connemara National Park was once part of the estate of Kylemore Abbey, originally built as a castle in 1885, the abbey became a haven for Benedictine nuns fleeing Belgium during World War I and is still home to a community of nuns now. Situated in one of the most stunning locations imaginable, Kylemore Abbey benefits from spectacular views, and also features beautiful walled gardens with 21 glasshouses which were heated by an incredible feat of engineering for the time, and in which to this day the gardeners only grow fruits and vegetables which would have been available in Victorian times. Another beautiful place to visit on a short break to Galway is Coole Park, a 1000 acre nature reserve which was once the home of Lady Augusta Gregory, a dramatist, folklore enthusiast and founder of the Abbey Theatre. One of the theatre’s co-founders, William Butler Yeats was a regular visitor to Coole Park and composed ‘In the Seven Woods’ about the woodland contained therein. Believed to be a sacral site associated with the rituals surrounding kingship, there are several sites on the hill which have yielded fascinating artefacts dating back as far as the 1st century. There is a Iron Age hilltop enclosure known as the Fort of Kings and a standing stone, known as the Stone of Destiny, which legend foretells will scream out in a voice which could be heard all over Ireland if a would-be king should meet a series of challenges. Co. Waterford

With a rich history spanning thousands of years, County Waterford is a teeming with evidence of settlers from the early megalithic era through the Viking and Anglo-Norman buildings combined with the vibrant modern lifestyle that gives a sense of the development of Irish culture and heritage. Lying to the south east of Ireland, Waterford is home to over 30 beaches along its volcanic coastline, known as the Copper Coast. This area has been designated as a UNESCO geopark in recognition of its geological importance and comprises sandy coves, caves and harbours as well as forests, rivers and bog land which is teeming with wildlife and offers fantastic views and photo opportunities for anyone who wants to capture the unique atmosphere of the area. For a sense of Wexford’s place in international history a trip to Duncannon Fort is a real eye opener. Built in 1588 to protect against an attack by the Spanish Armada, modern visitors can walk around the outer ramparts of this star-shaped fortress and enjoy spectacular views across the estuary to County Waterford and Hook Head. After the 1798 rebellion, the fort was put to use detaining prisoners before trial and sentencing, and now the site houses a Maritime Museum in which visitors can learn all they could wish to know about the history of one of the most dangerous coastlines in Ireland. Co. Wicklow

Situated beneath the Wicklow Mountains, the largest continuous upland region in the whole of Ireland, County Wicklow offers everything a visitor could want, from fishing and hiking, monastic settlements and even Ireland’s first offshore wind farm is located off the coast at Arklow Bank. The Wicklow Mountains are an imposing sight and their influence on the area’s heritage is felt wherever you go, particularly if you visit the spectacular Powerscourt Estate. Conwy

As a walled town on the north coast of Wales, Conwy oozes all the charm that you would expect from a traditional coastal market town, and makes a great destination for a short break. Overlooked by beautiful mountains, the medieval town retains many buildings and attractions which pay tribute to its past as a stronghold for English settlers. Although Welsh nationals were forbidden from entering the town for years under the rule of Edward I of England, it is now a bustling town with a population who extend a warm welcome to non-conquering visitors. Built between 1283 and 1289, Conwy Castle replaced an earlier fortification built by Henry III which had been destroyed in 1263. The services of 1,500 labourers were required to build the castle, its defences and the walls which remain around the town, and the fact that they remain in good repair is testament to the craftsmanship of their work. Today’s visitors can walk the walls, explore the towers and enjoy spectacular views of the city from an incredible vantage point, looking out across the River Conwy. One of the most impressive sights for visitors to Conwy is the suspension bridge, one of the first of its kind in the world which was built in 1826 by Thomas Telford to replace the previous ferry service. The supports for the bridge are built into the rock at the base of Conwy Castle and to complement the architecture the turrets of the bridge were designed to echo the design of the castle’s towers. Now open only to foot traffic, the bridge has been joined by one built by Robert Stephenson but until this was built, Telford’s bridge was the only way to cross the river and to get to the ferry that leaves for Ireland. Another of Conwy’s unique attractions is the smallest house in Britain which is situated on the quayside. Measuring 8ft wide by 10ft tall, the one-up-one down house used to belong to a 6ft fisherman, despite the fact that he couldn’t stand up inside and had no indoor toilet, and now holds a well-deserved place in the Guinness Book of Records. Anyone who enjoys immersing themselves in the quirkier side of Conwy’s culture will also love the chance to join Blodwen the Maid at Plas Mawr Elizabethan Town house for a tour of the residence which encompasses the darker side to its history, some of the local stories about the house’s residents and information about the ghosts and ghouls which supposedly haunt the house. Of course, if the great outdoors appeals to you, then you could hardly pick a better spot for a short break than Conwy – with over a third of the borough being contained within Snowdonia National Park you can enjoy gentle strolls, long hikes and even a spot of mountain climbing if you’re feeling adventurous. The area provides a habitat for several rare mammals and if you venture into the park itself you could find yourself face to face with a polecat, otter or even a feral goat if you are lucky. Cork

Cork is possibly most famous as the location of the Blarney Stone, considered by some to posses mystical qualities which imbue anyone who kisses it with the power to speak so eloquently on their own behalf that millions of people from all across the world have visited Blarney Castle and dangled themselves over the edge of a parapet just to kiss the stone and secure their own gift of the gab. However, there is a lot more to County Cork than just a chance to pursue your dreams of garrulousness which anyone visiting on a short break will enjoy. You can visit Cobh, the port town which was ‘temporarily’ called Queenstown for 71 years to honour a visit from Queen Victoria, and from which two and a half million Irish citizens who emigrated to America between 1848 and 1950 departed. Fife

Still commonly known as the Kingdom of Fife by the people of Scotland, Fife was once one of the kingdoms identified by the Picts who inhabited north eastern Scotland in the late Iron Age. They spoke the now-extinct Pictish language and a variety of sources chart their history from the 6th century until their identity began to merge with that of the surrounding settlers. Modern visitors on a short break to Fife can see evidence of their habitation in the form of Pictish stones, and although there is still some confusion over their purpose and meaning, they remain beautiful reminders of the area’s rich history and their designs can be seen on plenty of local crafts and in folk art. Fife is perhaps most famous as the location of the Firth of Forth, an estuary of the River Forth formed by a glacier in the last glacial period, and known as Bodotria in Roman times. As well as a beautiful area, home to plenty of picturesque villages, there is also the groundbreaking Forth Bridge, the first bridge in Britain to be constructed from steel and used as a reference point for British sailors returning from World War I, a practice which continued until the 1990s. As home to 4,961 listed buildings and 48 conservation areas, Fife has plenty to entertain any visitor with an interest in local history and plenty of them are open to visitors today. Falkland Palace is one such place, acquired by the Scottish Crown from MacDuff of Fife in the 14th century, the palace does have some grisly moments in its history. The First Duke of Albany, Robert Stewart threw his nephew in prison at Falkland Castle where he eventually died from starvation and neglect. The resulting controversy eventually resulted in the down fall of the Albany Stewarts, but today’s visitors can explore its extensive gardens and take in the incredible interior of the Chapel Royal, the tapestry gallery and even the bakehouse where you can get a taste of what it would have been like to be in service for the families that lived there. If all that history just isn’t enough for you, then you should take a trip to Ravenscraig Castle in Kirkcaldy which dates back to around 1460 and is one of the earlier examples of a defensive castle in Scotland. Thought to be one of the first in the country to be designed specifically to withstand artillery fire, the king who commissioned the design was killed, ironically enough, in an accident involving a loaded cannon. Naturally defended on three sides by steep cliffs, a visit to the castle is a chance to enjoy spectacular views as well as a glimpse into the history of the area, and it may have been this spectacular setting that inspired Sir Walter Scott’s ballad which tells the story of ‘the lovely Rosabelle’ who tragically drowns whilst trying to cross the First of Forth for a family ball. Anyone with an interest in all things supernatural will be thrilled to find themselves in the Babell triangle, one of Flintshire’s most haunted locations. Local legend has it that this area has hordes of gigantic ghosts roaming the country roads but as if that weren’t enough there are tales of werewolves watching people from the darkness. Perhaps unsurprisingly, there are a few pubs in the area which seem to attract ghosts and you can visit them all on a supernatural tour of the area. Galway

With ample evidence of its 7000 year history, County Galway is not only a great place for a short break, but also a vibrant county which has much to offer visitors wherever their interests may lie. Opened to the public in 1980, the park retains evidence of human settlement, including 4000 year old megalithic court tombs and a 19th century graveyard. There are numerous species of flora and fauna to be found in the park, including carnivorous specimens such as sundew and butterworts trap, a variety of birds including kestrels, peregrine falcons and merlins, and larger animals such as stoats, bats and the eponymous Connemara pony. Much of Connemara National Park was once part of the estate of Kylemore Abbey, originally built as a castle in 1885, the abbey became a haven for Benedictine nuns fleeing Belgium during World War I and is still home to a community of nuns now. Situated in one of the most stunning locations imaginable, Kylemore Abbey benefits from spectacular views, and also features beautiful walled gardens with 21 glasshouses which were heated by an incredible feat of engineering for the time, and in which to this day the gardeners only grow fruits and vegetables which would have been available in Victorian times. Another beautiful place to visit on a short break to Galway is Coole Park, a 1000 acre nature reserve which was once the home of Lady Augusta Gregory, a dramatist, folklore enthusiast and founder of the Abbey Theatre. One of the theatre’s co-founders, William Butler Yeats was a regular visitor to Coole Park and composed ‘In the Seven Woods’ about the woodland contained therein. Yeats and fellow literary figures George Bernard Shaw, John Millington Synge and Sean O’Casey carved their initials onto an old beech tree, known as the Autograph Tree, which still stands today. Glamorgan

Originally a medieval kingdom known as Glywysing before being taken over by the Normans, the history of Glamorgan is both fascinating and bloody. The area is thought to have been inhabited for at least 200,000 years, albeit sporadically in between times where glacial activity rendered the place uninhabitable, and there is evidence of Neanderthal man’s presence around the Gower Peninsular. Despite being a fairly rural area with little or no political influence, nonetheless it was here that the Norman lords and Welsh princes clashed until it came under English rule in the 16th century. From then, its abundant natural resources such as metals and coal lead Glamorgan to play an important part in the Industrial Revolution. Glamorgan’s history is one of the many things that attract visitors to the area, with plenty of architectural treats in store for anyone who likes to chart a country’s progress through its buildings. For example, a visit to St Donat’s Castle will open your eyes to what life would have been like for the Celtic Kings, pirates, witches and even American millionaires who have lived in the castle over its 800 year history. Located on the land above the Bristol Channel and with all the things any self-respecting castle should have such as dungeons, a moat, antique ceilings and fireplaces, St Donat’s Castle is a must for anyone visiting Glamorgan on a short break. One of the most incredible ways to see the sights of Hampshire is with a scenic trip on the Watercress Line steam railway. Once used to transport produce to the markets at Covent Garden as well as passengers hoping to make their fortune in the capital, the railway has been lovingly restored by dedicated volunteers so that it can continue to offer a slice of history to modern travellers who want to relive the glory days of steam transport. The line passes through many picturesque towns and villages such as Arlesford, which retains many of the Georgian architecture and characteristics from its past, and Alton, a busting market town where you can immerse yourself in local life. Hereford

Situated on the banks of the River Wye, the name Hereford is thought to be a reference to the fact that troops were able to ford the river at the point where the city now stands. The wealth of historical sites, ancient architecture and beautiful views across the river make Hereford a great place to visit on a short break. Perhaps one of the most notable landmarks of the city is the cathedral which dates back to around 1079 and is a Grade I listed building. Hereford Cathedral houses many treasures, most famously the Mappa Mundi, a medieval map of the world which dates back to the 13th century and gives us a unique insight into how thinkers of the time viewed the planet and its inhabitants. The cathedral also has ten bells, which are hung at a height of 43 meters in the tower, the largest of which weighs 1.7 tonnes and the oldest of which dates back to the 13th century. Visitors today can hear the bells ringing their unique ‘Grand Old Lady’ peal and for those who are still hungry for more music, the organ which lies to the south side of the choir stalls is generally considered to be one of the finest examples of work by its creator Henry Wills. Hereford hosts plenty of events which are a great way to get involved for visitors to the city, including the annual Three Choirs festival which sees choirs from cathedrals of the Three Counties (Gloucester, Hereford and Worcester) performing a repertoire of choral compositions as well as concerts featuring other ensembles and performers. If you are interested in musical history, then you might want to visit the statue of a bulldog named Dan which stands beside the river. Sir Edward Elgar was inspired by Dan falling into the River Wye at Hereford to write one of the Enigma Variations, and you can even see a statue of the composer himself on Cathedral Close. Inverness-shire

Inverness-shire includes the Isles of Harris, Skye, Barra and Benbecula, so a short trip to the area could include a boat trip to one of these places where the traditional way of life has been preserved and everything the inhabitants need must be either made in situ or acquired from the mainland. Isle of Anglesey

The painting portrays a variety of scenes, including trompe l’oeil, a number of individual motifs and a series of clues to the tragic tale of the unrequited love that Whistler felt for Lady Caroline Paget.
