Aberdeenshire

Located on the East Coast of Scotland, Aberdeenshire shows signs of settlements dating back to the Neolithic and Bronze ages, meaning that even early man appreciated the natural beauty of the area and that is one of the things that really hasn’t changed much over the intervening years. For a truly royal experience, you can take a trip to Balmoral Castle, a Royal residence since 1852 when Queen Victoria purchased it with her husband, although it was soon found to be far too small and was completely rebuilt in 1856. The new building was designed to feature Scots Baronial style architecture and amendments to the original plans were made by Prince Albert himself. Now covering nearly 50,000 acres, the estate is still in working order and includes several herds of deer, grouse moors and the famous Highland cattle. There are plenty of other castles to visit in varying states of repair including the ruins of Dunnottar Castle which sits on a rocky outcrop over the North Sea from which you can enjoy spectacular views and maybe even spot of the rare birds which make their home there. Or if you fancy a castle which is still standing, you can visit Crathes Castle near Banchory, given to the Burnett of Leys family by Robert the Bruce himself and now owned and run by the National Trust and home to a significant portrait collection and, if you believe the rumours, a ghostly green lady who haunts one of the rooms. If you prefer to see what nature has had in store for Aberdeenshire, then why not take a trip to Burn O’Vat? A huge pothole thought to have been created by the movements of glacial ice sheets around 14,000 years ago, Burn O’Vat was supposedly used by Rob Roy as a hideout when he was evading the authorities, and now has a visitor centre where you can see taxidermy and topographical exhibits. For anyone who wants to try their luck spotting wildlife on a short break, Portlethen Moss is an acidic bog which supports a wide variety of plant and animal species native to the area. Bedfordshire

Bordered on the south by the Chiltern Hills and lying largely in the drainage basin of the River Ouse, Bedfordshire is ideally located within easy reach of London but rural enough to offer a complete break from big city life for anyone enjoying a short break in the area. The area now known as Bedfordshire has existed in some form or other since 1011 and evidence of its evolution since then is obvious everywhere and you can visit some of the key locations when you visit the area. Someries Castle is named after its owner, William de Someries, but is technically a fortified manor house where visitors can see the remains of the gatehouse, manor and lodge. Wrest Park in Silsoe was once the home of the de Gray family, but now makes for a magnificent day out for any visitor. The country house estate comprises not only a Grade I listed house but also Grade I listed formal gardens as well, meaning that you can enjoy the full splendour of the French style 18th Century mansion from inside and admire it from outside from the garden landscaped by the famous Capability Brown. The de Gray Mausoleum may be a rather sombre spot to visit during your break in Bedfordshire, but its magnificence more than make up for it. Built around 1614, it is one of the largest sepulchral chapels in the country and contains over twenty monuments to members of the de Gray family. Anyone with an interest in life on the rails will enjoy the chance to take a trip on Leighton Buzzard light railway, which runs on a line built just after the war to serve sand quarries but is now run by a group of volunteers and they will even let you have a go at driving a steam train yourself if you choose. Cambridgeshire

Visitors can see the only airworthy B-17 Flying Fortress in Europe, witness amazing formation displays by the Red Arrows and regular flights by Spitfires, Hurricanes and Tiger Moths. Many people will be familiar with the city of Limerick as the setting for Frank McCourt’s blockbuster novel Angela’s Ashes, and if you want to visit the haunts which featured in the story then you can join a walking tour which will take you to the most significant spots and give you a chance to relive the tale in situ. There are also other city tours where experienced guides will give you an insight into the architectural and cultural history of the area. The county of Limerick has had human settlers since 3000 BCE, and the Lough Gur Neolithic Settlement and Stone Age Centre will give you an insight into what life must have been like for those living in the area in those times. Using archaeological finds, it has been possible to recreate the activities of the region’s earliest farmers, charting the progress of the area’s inhabitants right up to the modern day. In the 1930s and 40s, the port of Foynes became the centre of the world of aviation with the advent of the Flying Boat, travelling to the United States and Europe with a passenger list that reads like a who’s who of the superstars of the day. John F Kennedy, Eleanor Roosevelt, Humphrey Bogart and Ernest Hemmingway all travelled through Foynes, along with plenty of royal travellers from all over the world. At the Foynes Flying Boat Museum, you can chart the history of the port, see replicas of the flying boats, and learn about the terminal building’s claim to fame as the location in which Irish coffee was first invented. If you’re interested in history, then the Hunt Museum in Limerick is an ideal place to visit on your short break. The museum is home to over 2000 artefacts from Ireland and abroad, the oldest of which dates back to Stone Age Ireland, and includes a sketch by Picasso and a bronze horse designed by Leonardo Da Vinci as well as artefacts from ancient Egypt and the Antrim Cross. Cumbria

If art appreciation is your thing, then a short break in Cumbria has plenty to offer including the Keswick Art Gallery which opened in 1898 and has remained largely unchanged since. The museum contains exhibits including a 500 year old cat and a set of musical stones which have enthralled visitors for years and was even taken to London for a performance before Queen Victoria. The Lowes Court Gallery in Egremont contains a changing programme of monthly exhibitions of work from both new and established artists and is a perfect place to purchase a piece of original artwork. Gardening enthusiasts will be overwhelmed by the choice of places to visit in Cumbria, such as Hill Top in Ambleside, famously the home of Beatrix Potter who sketched the gardens and animals she saw in them for her books, many of which were written while she was living there. Another must-see is Dove Cottage in Grasmere which was home to William Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy, where he composed much of his poetry and she wrote the journals which later made her almost as famous. Much of their lives were centred around the garden and orchard on which the Wordsworth worked tirelessly. Cumbria has many unique historical features, perhaps the most famous of which are the series of small stone buildings designed and built during the reign of Edward I to resist counter attacks from the Scots who disapproved of his attempts to impose English rule upon them. Today many of these towers have become incorporated into the landscape, some as parts of working farms, some in stately homes and some built onto churches acting both as defensive towers and bell towers. Wherever you look there are lingering signs of Cumbria’s varied history, from Roman remains of roads and forts to stone circles and ancient crosses. Combined with the incredibly beautiful landscapes and vibrant city centres, a visit to Cumbria is guaranteed to open anyone’s eyes to what the area has to offer.
Derbyshire

There are those who claim that Derbyshire is home to the centre of Britain, and with so much to offer to visitors, a weekend break in Derbyshire will certainly make you feel like you have the whole country at your fingertips. There is something for everyone, including a wide variety of activities, attractions and opportunities to experience the traditions of the area which make Derbyshire special. It is believed that Derbyshire may have been first visited by humans 200,000 years ago, making the area a perfect short break destination for any history buff. Populated in earnest since the Stone Age, evidence of the early settlers’ presence is still visible today in the form of Neolithic burial mounds, chambered tombs designed for collective burial and mostly found in central Derbyshire. The most famous of these burial mounds is Arbor Lownear near Youlgreave, a henge comprising around 50 limestone blocks set into an oval pattern surrounding a small cove. Dating back to around 2000 BCE, it is still a popular place for visitors today and forms part of the Peak District’s White Peak zone. For those who prefer their history a little more recent, there are plenty of stately homes such as Chatsworth House, which comprises the house itself, its gardens, historic woodlands and the farmyard where visitors can see a wide variety of animals. The 100 acre park in which Chatsworth House stands was designed by ‘Capability’ Brown in the 1760s and if one of the most beautiful man-made landscapes in the country. Described as ‘the Gateway to the Peak District’ Buxton is one of Derbyshire’s most famous towns and is a great place to visit on a break to Derbyshire. As well as providing its famous water, Buxton’s geothermal spring also feeds Poole’s Cavern, a 2 million year old limestone cave named after an outlaw who used it as a lair and a base for robbing travellers during the 15th century. Now open to the public, Poole’s Cavern comprises several chambers including the ‘Sculpture Chamber’ which houses a series of stalactites and stalagmites. If you prefer to stay above ground, then the Peak District National Park is a fascinating place to visit for anyone who appreciates amazing views, wildlife photography or anyone who likes the challenge of hiking through some of the most varied terrain you can find in the country. The nearby town of Matlock is a great place to rest your weary legs and enjoy some local colour and if you’re feeling in need of some serious pampering then you may be interested to know that the area’s development as a spa town in the 19th century came as a result of the introduction of the revolutionary practice of hydrotherapy by John Smedley and the building of the imposing ‘Hydro’ spa which can still be seen today albeit now housing council offices which it has done since 1950. Derbyshire makes a great destination for a short break and offers visitors plenty of sights and scenery as well as bustling market towns and nightlife, so you can enjoy the very best in entertainment in glorious surroundings.
Dumfrieshire
Durham

It is said that Durham takes its name from the legend of the Dun Cow and the Milkmaid who were said to have guided the monks of Lindisfarne carrying the body of Saint Cuthbert to the site of the present city in 995 AD, although history records several different names for the city over the years. The centre of Durham is designated a conservation area, largely down to the huge number of architecturally and historical important structures within the city. There are over 630 listed buildings, making Durham a haven for historians, and one of the most popular is Durham Castle, a Norman stronghold which dates back to the 11th century and is an example of the early Motte and Bailey castles favoured at the time. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the castle has been occupied by University College Durham since 1840 and is now open to guided tours for the public. Durham Cathedral was founded in 1093 and the present cathedral replaces the 10th century White Church which was built as part of a monastic foundation designed to house the shrine of Saint Cuthbert of Lindisfarne and is currently home to relics including the head of St Oswald of Northumbria and the remains of the Venerable Bede. Recently featured as one of the BBC’s Britain’s Best Buildings, it was also described as ‘best Cathedral on planet earth’ by Bill Bryson in ‘Notes from a Small Island’. Still a working place of worship, visitors can enjoy organ recitals, choral concerts and regular religious services as well as guided tours which will give you an insight into the modern workings of the cathedral. As a city with a long history of boating, a short break to Durham can be an excellent chance to take in some of the events which contribute to modern life on the water. The Durham Regatta has been running for 178 years, and the races take place at an astonishing pace with one every two minutes between 8.30am and 6.30pm. If ten straight hours of racing seems a little excessive, there are also other events such as a Vintage Car Rally, musical performances and stands and stalls which are perfect for browsing in between the excitement. For those who fancy something with a little more whimsy, then perhaps a visit to the New Victoria Centre is in order. Known as ‘Home of the Mighty Wurlitzer’, the centre holds monthly concerts where their famous pipe organ is played for appreciative audiences. With 18 ranks of pipes and three manual keyboards, the organ was originally built in America before being installed in the New Victoria Theatre in Bradford in 1930 to entertain patrons between films, and was recently repaired and renovated in order to continue to delight modern audiences with its unique sound. County Durham is ensconced in beautiful countryside, making it an ideal place to enjoy the great outdoors, and the Durham Dales offer a stunning backdrop to any activity, whether you prefer a gentle stroll, a day out on the bike or just a little wildlife spotting and a picnic in the tranquil near-wilderness. East Sussex
Essex

Located just outside London, Essex’s rolling countryside is the perfect place for a short break to get away from it all and escape the hustle and bustle of city living without having to spend hours in the car heading towards the remotest parts of the country. You can have everything you could wish for from a relaxing break, and whether you’re coming getting out of London or visiting from elsewhere, you’re sure to have a fantastic time in Essex. Once home to the an ancient tribe who grew wealthy from trading with the Romans, Colchester was once the capital of Britannia and is on record as Britain’s oldest town, dating back to pre-Roman times when it used to have its own mint. Whilst it’s no longer possible to get yourself a freshly minted coin, visitors to the area today can see evidence of the county’s rich history, such as Hedingham Castle. A Norman structure dating back to around 1140, the castle stands at over 110 feet and is a traditional motte and bailey structure with a stone keep. It is still owned by the descendents of the original owner, Aubrey de Vere, and you can explore its rooms over four floors, including a banqueting hall and an incredible 28 foot arch which is one of the largest in the country. The grounds are perfectly maintained, and if you go over the summer there are a variety of events for visitors to enjoy, including some real life jousting. For anyone who wants to get out into the glory of nature, a short break to Essex is a chance to take a trip to Epping Forest, an area of ancient woodland covering nearly 2,500 acres which makes for a perfect place to enjoy the great outdoors. The forest was first given legal status in the 12th century, allowing commoners to use the land for farming and gathering foodstuff, a sentiment which came under threat over the years but was upheld in 1882 when it was designated ‘the people’s forest’ by Queen Victoria. Comprising grassland, heaths, rivers, bogs and ponds, Epping Forest is teeming with nature, and its former use in agriculture means it is an ideal habitat for deer, Muntjac, adders and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. If you want to take a trip to one of the most picturesque towns around, then you can make your way to Saffron Walden where a variety of buildings dating from the medieval period onwards line the streets. The popularity of saffron in the 16th century for use in medicine, as a perfume and even as an aphrodisiac lead to an increase in crocus farming in the area which in turn gave the town its name. Audley End was built on the site of the medieval Walden Abbey in the 17th century and was the largest house in the country at the time of its construction. Now owned by English Heritage, the manor house and gardens are open to visitors and also host outdoor concerts and fireworks displays throughout the summer months. From history and heritage to wildlife and woodlands, a short break to Essex is a great way to explore some of the most incredible countryside, discover something about the area’s past or just relax and indulge yourself.
Gloucestershire

Because it incorporates areas of the Cotswold Hills, the valley of the River Severn and the entire Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire makes an ideal short break destination for anyone who wants to get away from the hustle and bustle of their daily lives to relax in the unspoilt beauty of nature. Bourton-on-the-Water is one of the places in the area which have become synonymous with the picturesque tranquillity which sometimes seems all but lost in today’s world. Known as the Venice of the Cotswolds, the path of the River Windrush runs through the middle of a village, spanned by a selection of bridges at strategic points, and giving the whole area an air feeling of other worldly charm.
