Co. Antrim

Co. Donegal

Co. Galway

With ample evidence of its 7000 year history, County Galway is not only a great place for a short break, but also a vibrant county which has much to offer visitors wherever their interests may lie. For nature lovers, Connemara National Park is an ideal spot to visit on a gift break to Galway. Opened to the public in 1980, the park retains evidence of human settlement, including 4000 year old megalithic court tombs and a 19th century graveyard. There are numerous species of flora and fauna to be found in the park, including carnivorous specimens such as sundew and butterworts trap, a variety of birds including kestrels, peregrine falcons and merlins, and larger animals such as stoats, bats and the eponymous Connemara pony. Much of Connemara National Park was once part of the estate of Kylemore Abbey, originally built as a castle in 1885, the abbey became a haven for Benedictine nuns fleeing Belgium during World War I and is still home to a community of nuns now. Situated in one of the most stunning locations imaginable, Kylemore Abbey benefits from spectacular views, and also features beautiful walled gardens with 21 glasshouses which were heated by an incredible feat of engineering for the time, and in which to this day the gardeners only grow fruits and vegetables which would have been available in Victorian times. Another beautiful place to visit on a short break to Galway is Coole Park, a 1000 acre nature reserve which was once the home of Lady Augusta Gregory, a dramatist, folklore enthusiast and founder of the Abbey Theatre. One of the theatre’s co-founders, William Butler Yeats was a regular visitor to Coole Park and composed ‘In the Seven Woods’ about the woodland contained therein. Yeats and fellow literary figures George Bernard Shaw, John Millington Synge and Sean O’Casey carved their initials onto an old beech tree, known as the Autograph Tree, which still stands today. For anyone who loves to see creativity in action, Spiddal Craft and Design Studios is an ideal spot to stop and watch the artists and craft workers designing, creating and selling their wares. Co. Kerry

The County of Kerry is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, meaning that visitors can enjoy spectacular sea views as well as beautiful countryside and all the warm hospitality that is synonymous with Ireland. Killarney National Park is an ideal spot to visit on a short break for anyone who wants to get back to nature, with nearly 25,000 acres of beautiful scenery including mountains, lakes and natural native habitats which are home to a wide variety of plants and wildlife. On the slopes of the Torc and Mangerton peaks live the only native herd of red deer in the country and Japanese Sika deer can be found throughout the mountain areas and woodlands. Birdwatchers will be keen to spot the Peregrine Falcons and Merlins which make the park their home, and there are also examples of Atlantic, North American and rare Arctic-Alpine plants such as St Patrick’s cabbage and Blue-Eyed grass. Also within the park, on the shores of Muckross Lake is Muckross House, a beautiful stately home which is one of the most popular attractions for visitors to the area. The Herbert family who originally owned the house hosted a visit from Queen Victoria, and today many of the mansion’s rooms have been restored to the splendour in which she would have seen them in 1861. During the summer months, Muckross Gardens are decked out with the blooms of the mature rhododendrons which have been cultivated there, and visitors can also take a stroll around the sunken garden, the rock garden and an arboretum which features many trees from the southern hemisphere. You can also take a step back in time at the Kerry Bog Museum, where you can learn all about how people lived and worked in Ireland in the 18th century, with painstakingly accurate recreations of the buildings whose designers measured ruins, visited old sites and consulted ancient documents to ensure that visitors get a truly authentic experience. The Blacksmith’s forge was moved, brick by brick, from its original location in Brosna in the North of Kerry and the village is also home to some Kerry Bog Ponies, rescued from near extinction to be preserved with a careful breeding programme. Ardfert Cathedral can be found in Tralee, and is a fine example of 12th century architecture, featuring a Romanesque doorway, 13th century windows and battlements added in the 15th century. Anyone wishing to delve further into the history of the area can visit Caherciveen Heritage centre, housed in a former Irish army barracks whose unusual architecture has given rise to stories that its original plans were mixed up with those of a barracks to be built in India. A home to craft workshops, displays of archaeological remains and exhibits on Daniel O’Connell and the Fenian uprising, visitors to the centre can learn everything they could wish to know about the history of the local area. Co. Kildare

Set in nearly 1000 acres of land, the stud is committed to promoting the famous Irish bloodstock around the world as well as providing a fascinating insight into the history or equestrianism in Ireland with a museum dedicated to the story of how horses have played such an important part in the area’s culture. Co. Limerick

It may be most famous for sharing a name with short poems, but Limerick has plenty more to offer than an array of slightly risqué rhymes. As the third largest city in the Republic of Ireland, Limerick offers visitors on a short break the chance to enjoy nightlife, nature and a host of other entertainment opportunities. Many people will be familiar with the city of Limerick as the setting for Frank McCourt’s blockbuster novel Angela’s Ashes, and if you want to visit the haunts which featured in the story then you can join a walking tour which will take you to the most significant spots and give you a chance to relive the tale in situ. There are also other city tours where experienced guides will give you an insight into the architectural and cultural history of the area. The county of Limerick has had human settlers since 3000 BCE, and the Lough Gur Neolithic Settlement and Stone Age Centre will give you an insight into what life must have been like for those living in the area in those times. Using archaeological finds, it has been possible to recreate the activities of the region’s earliest farmers, charting the progress of the area’s inhabitants right up to the modern day. In the 1930s and 40s, the port of Foynes became the centre of the world of aviation with the advent of the Flying Boat, travelling to the United States and Europe with a passenger list that reads like a who’s who of the superstars of the day. John F Kennedy, Eleanor Roosevelt, Humphrey Bogart and Ernest Hemmingway all travelled through Foynes, along with plenty of royal travellers from all over the world. At the Foynes Flying Boat Museum, you can chart the history of the port, see replicas of the flying boats, and learn about the terminal building’s claim to fame as the location in which Irish coffee was first invented. If you’re interested in history, then the Hunt Museum in Limerick is an ideal place to visit on your short break. The museum is home to over 2000 artefacts from Ireland and abroad, the oldest of which dates back to Stone Age Ireland, and includes a sketch by Picasso and a bronze horse designed by Leonardo Da Vinci as well as artefacts from ancient Egypt and the Antrim Cross. Galway

With ample evidence of its 7000 year history, County Galway is not only a great place for a short break, but also a vibrant county which has much to offer visitors wherever their interests may lie.
