County Down has the distinction of being home to both the most southerly and most easterly points in Northern Ireland, so visitors to the area can enjoy their truly unique views and outlook on life. With several islands off the coast, and the Mourne mountains rising out of the beautiful countryside, there is plenty of scope for taking fantastic photos as well as making amazing memories on a short break to County Down. The big influence that the sea has had on the area can be experienced in all its glory with a trip to Exploris, the Northern Ireland Aquarium which is situated in Strangford on the shores of a marine nature reserve which is also an area of special scientific interest. Home to a seal sanctuary and hospital, the aquarium rescues, rehabilitates and releases orphaned and injured seals. The sanctuary started as a garden shed set up to help a grey seal pup which was found on a beach by a member of the public, but now comprises a large, purpose built haven for seals in need, and visitors can see them enjoying the facilities both in and out of the water. There are plenty of ways to interact with marine life and learn about what goes on under the waters off the Down coast, making Exploris a must-see destination for anyone on a short break. If you want to soak up some personal history, there is nowhere better than the Old Inn at Crawfordsburn, a 17th century building which retains an elegant, old-world charm and a rich history of providing a warm welcome to a host of famous visitors. These include Jonathan Swift, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Charles Dickens and CS Lewis even took his honeymoon there, and it was a hub of creativity and a meeting place of many literary contemporaries. There are several stories which suggest that the Inn is in fact haunted, so it may be best to enjoy a succulent afternoon tea and be on your way before darkness falls and you are at the mercy of the spooks and ghouls which may be walking the halls. For those who enjoy getting out in the glory of nature, there are plenty of beautiful scenic walks which can be enjoyed at a gentle stroll or vigorous hike, whichever suits you best. You can take in beautiful landscapes, spot local wildlife and learn about the area’s heritage all at your own pace and with plenty of opportunities for leisurely picnics and memorable photos. The view of the Mourne Mountains will make it easy to see how they formed the inspiration for the mystical world of Narnia, with their summits topped with granite tors, and if you’re feeling energetic you can even follow one of the many footpaths towards the peaks. Any golfer will love the chance to play on a championship golf course, and this is just what the Royal County Down offers. Laid out in 1889 by ‘Old’ Tom Morris from St Andrews, the course combines the existing beauty of its surroundings with exquisitely maintained greens to form a course which has impressed many pro golfers over the years and is sure to make it into your top ten. Those visiting Yorkshire on a short break will probably be unsurprised to discover the fierce pride that the locals feel about their home county and the nickname ‘God’s own county’ is indicative of the strength of feeling that the area engenders in its inhabitants. With huge areas of unspoilt countryside, including the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Dales, anyone with an interest in walking, climbing or just enjoying the peace and tranquillity of the beautiful landscape will find themselves spoilt for choice when it comes to which spots to visit. One of the industries for which Yorkshire is most famous is brewing which began in earnest in the 12th century. Today the county is home to several breweries producing traditional bitter. Some of the more famous, such as John Smith’s and Theakstons, have been brewing in the area for generations, but the popularity of the industry means that new breweries are opening all the time. One of the more recent brands is Copper Dragon, which opened in 2002 and is open to visitors who want to take a tour of the plant and learn all about how modern brewing techniques produce traditional flavours and continues the long-held traditions of the area. Yorkshire has a rich literary and cultural heritage, and there are plenty of places to visit where you can see examples of the impact that some of the famous names to come out of the area have had. Alan Bennet is one of the more contemporary Yorkshire men to have made his name in recent years, and his work is filled with references to traditional Yorkshire life.
