Derbyshire

It is believed that Derbyshire may have been first visited by humans 200,000 years ago, making the area a perfect short break destination for any history buff. Fife

Still commonly known as the Kingdom of Fife by the people of Scotland, Fife was once one of the kingdoms identified by the Picts who inhabited north eastern Scotland in the late Iron Age. They spoke the now-extinct Pictish language and a variety of sources chart their history from the 6th century until their identity began to merge with that of the surrounding settlers. Modern visitors on a short break to Fife can see evidence of their habitation in the form of Pictish stones, and although there is still some confusion over their purpose and meaning, they remain beautiful reminders of the area’s rich history and their designs can be seen on plenty of local crafts and in folk art. Fife is perhaps most famous as the location of the Firth of Forth, an estuary of the River Forth formed by a glacier in the last glacial period, and known as Bodotria in Roman times. As home to 4,961 listed buildings and 48 conservation areas, Fife has plenty to entertain any visitor with an interest in local history and plenty of them are open to visitors today. Falkland Palace is one such place, acquired by the Scottish Crown from MacDuff of Fife in the 14th century, the palace does have some grisly moments in its history. The First Duke of Albany, Robert Stewart threw his nephew in prison at Falkland Castle where he eventually died from starvation and neglect. The resulting controversy eventually resulted in the down fall of the Albany Stewarts, but today’s visitors can explore its extensive gardens and take in the incredible interior of the Chapel Royal, the tapestry gallery and even the bakehouse where you can get a taste of what it would have been like to be in service for the families that lived there. If all that history just isn’t enough for you, then you should take a trip to Ravenscraig Castle in Kirkcaldy which dates back to around 1460 and is one of the earlier examples of a defensive castle in Scotland. Thought to be one of the first in the country to be designed specifically to withstand artillery fire, the king who commissioned the design was killed, ironically enough, in an accident involving a loaded cannon. Naturally defended on three sides by steep cliffs, a visit to the castle is a chance to enjoy spectacular views as well as a glimpse into the history of the area, and it may have been this spectacular setting that inspired Sir Walter Scott’s ballad which tells the story of ‘the lovely Rosabelle’ who tragically drowns whilst trying to cross the First of Forth for a family ball. Kent

The county of Kent is not known as the Garden of England without good reason – the south east has long been home to an abundance of orchards and hop gardens which formed the basis of the area’s economy for years. The other industry which has really shaped Kent’s history is shipping, with maritime heritage dating back as far as 2000 years bursting out all over the county. Because of its location between London and the mainland of Europe, Kent has long been considered a defensive stronghold up to and including its role in the Battle of Britain during the Second World War which saw east Kent being nicknamed ‘Hell Fire Corner’. A short break to Kent gives any enthusiast a chance to chart its maritime history through the last 2000 years, and there is no better place to learn more than Dover Castle. Built by Henry II in the 1160s on the remains of an Iron Age hill fort, the role Dover Castle has played in English history has seen is constantly garrisoned for around nine hundred years until 1958. The great keep stands at just over 80 feet high and forms the heart of the structure which was originally designed to demonstrate the power of the king and provide somewhere to entertain esteemed guests. During World War II, the castle was put to practical use when an underground hospital was created to treat injured soldiers and ‘Operation Dynamo’ saw a network of secret tunnels used to mastermind a plot to rescue 338,000 allied troops from Dunkirk. Lincolnshire

Montgomeryshire

Morayshire

Norfolk

Northumberland

Norwich

Roman settlers founded their regional capital a few miles south of modern Norwich, and the area where the city now stands was an Anglo Saxon settlement, meaning that the area is rich with historical landmarks and architectural treasures. One of the dominating features of the city is the striking Norman cathedral which is home to the largest cloisters in England and the second largest spire in the country as well as 1,200 carved stone roof bosses which are considered one of the greatest art treasures in the world. The cathedral also has a collection of 61 misericords, sometimes called mercy seats, which are decorated with a selection of images including portraits and mythological scenes. There are several ancient buildings within the city wall, which make it one of the most complete medieval cities in Britain. Norwich Castle was founded after the Norman Conquest, and the Domesday Book tells us that 98 homes were demolished to clear the site. Somerset

A rural county which encompasses the Mendip Hills, Exmoor National Park and the Quantock Hills, Somerset is a great place to visit for anyone with an interest in nature, and as the scene of significant events in the rise to power of King Alfred the Great there is also plenty for history buffs to enjoy in the county. Over 100 areas in Somerset have been designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest including much of Exmoor National Park. Originally a Royal Forest and hunting ground, the park was sold off in 1818 before becoming a National Park in 1954. The diversity of flora and fauna makes the park a haven for anyone with an interest in natural history, and as you walk around you can spot the wild Exmoor ponies which have lived on the moors since the last warden of Exmoor established the herd. For those who enjoy walking, the Coleridge Way is a 36 mile footpath which traces the routes that Samuel Taylor Coleridge took as he walked across the moor towards Porlock, and includes Nether Stowey and Dunkery Beacon on its route. Designed and created by artist and poet Ian Hamilton Finlay and his wife Sue, the Arcadian garden includes sculptures of concrete poetry and two temples alongside over 275 other works of art created by the artist himself in collaboration with other craftspeople. The first cathedral to be built on the site was around 700 CE, but the current Gothic style cathedral’s building began in 1195 and was finally completed in 1330 when the Lady Chapel was built. Victorian renovations complete the modern aspect of the cathedral, but in 2003 an 8th century panel depicting the Archangel Gabriel in sculpture was discovered, so the cathedrals story continues. Anyone with a fondness for primates will want to head to Trentham to visit Monkey Forest where over 140 Barbary Macaques roam 60 acres of Staffordshire woodland and gardens in total freedom. For those who like to get out and enjoy the beauty of nature, the Manifold Way is a footpath which runs the 8 miles from Hulme End to Waterhouses through the Manifold Valley following the route of the former Leek and Manifold Light Valley Railway which closed in 1934. Walkers and cyclists can enjoy a fairly gentle stroll taking in Thor’s Cave, Beeston Tor and a mill at Whetton Hill. The house carries with it an air of tranquillity which can be felt as soon as you enter, and the artwork, mouldings and collections all make for fascinating viewing. Outside there is a beautifully maintained walled garden featuring traditional planting and a pergola as well as a croquet lawn where you can play a game yourself on your visit.
